DNV has developed rules and standards for ships for more than 140 years, and is a world leading classification society. We also develop rules and standards for the offshore industry, particularly within oil- and gas field development, production and transportation. The Rules for classification of ships lay down technical and procedural requirements related to obtaining and retaining a Class Certificate.
Rules for Planning and Execution of Marine Operations are recognised worldwide by both the marine and offshore industry, and are commonly quoted as the basis reference for marine operations. The rules lay down technical and procedural requirements related to proper planning and execution of marine operations.
The Rules for Classification of High Speed, Light Craft and Naval Surface Craft lay down technical and procedural requirements related to obtaining and retaining a Class Certificate.
The Rules for other objects lay down technical and procedural requirements related to obtaining and retaining a Class Certificate for the object in question.
Standards for Certification are publications that contain principles, acceptance criteria and practical information related to DNV's consideration of objects, personnel, organisations, services and operations. Standards for Certification also apply as the basis for the issue of certificates and/or declarations that may not necessarily be related to classification.
Publications that give practical information on classification of ships and other objects. Examples of design solutions, calculation methods, specifications of test procedures, as well as acceptable repair methods for some components are given as interpretations of the more general rule requirements.
The DNV Offshore Codes consist of a 3-level hierarchy of documents: Offshore Service Specifications, Offshore Standards, and Recommended Practices.
DNV Statutory Interpretations give technical and procedural interpretations related to obtaining and retaining a Statutory Certificate, when not instructed otherwise by the flag administration, and no other IACS or IMO interpretations exist. Such interpretations may be on matters which are left to the satisfaction of the flag administration or are vaguely worded, etc.
DNV offers OREDA and ESReDA handbooks with key information and data for risk and reliability analysis.
